The European Alliance for Innovation (EAI) was created by a community of innovation leaders from industry, research, government and non-governmental sectors to address Europe’s challenge that the European Union, federal and local governments, public and private industry, researchecrs and scientists in Europe are engaged in parallel, and not often, in collaboration on technology development and entrepreneurial innovation.
EAI envisions Innovation as a complete cycle going from education, to research, to business and to the multiple levels of benefit to society. The cycle starts with idea-generation, then moving to prioritising and funding the ideas, followed by converting them into products. Finally, it involves diffusing those products and business practices through their launch on the market, in order for them to have a real impact on society by creating new jobs and improving living standards.
Thus, to support and boost the innovation cycle, EAI aims at providing a Web 2.0 market place where EAI members can access different services and bundle them together to fit their needs. These services are meant to support specific phases of the Innovation Cycle and allow entrepreneurs to access to a community of specialists to achieve their goals. For example, researchers and SMEs are often facing problem when they take their product to the market because of lack of recognition by standardization bodies. Thus a pre-standardization service that enables the different interested party to early meet and discuss about common standard for a specific issue during the early stages of the prototypal work will effectively later on boost the adoption of the final product and the acceptance by standardization bodies. Another valuable example of service is the evaluation of technologies both from the technology provider perspective that from the technology adopter. It is crucial to have an independent evaluation of products so that adopters can trustworthily make a choice between different solutions.
By making accessible such services through a unique access point EAI will facilitate their usage and combination enlarging the outreach of services. Thus EAI members will not only benefit by having access to such services, but also by providing their services through EAI.
